This class will examine the historical influences on the creation of the first 'photographic' image made by Nicephore Niepce in 1826-7. Specifically, four main influences discussed:
1) Plato and the shadow images of *skiagraphia* represented on a planar surface
2) Greek and Roman optical perspective theories
3) Magic of Renaissance science, i.e., sensitized solutions of silver nitrate in the presence of light
4) Romantic theories representing the visible and invisible
